Formats and Competitions

The three cricket formats and the leagues Bangladeshis love

T20

Each team gets only 20 overs, so runs, wickets, and odds change very fast. BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) and IPL are the most popular competitions in this format. The T20 World Cup draws intense interest from bettors in every match. In this short format, the game can turn at any moment, which keeps in-play betting very active.

ODI

In this 50-over format the pace of the game is a little slower, but odds still move up and down every session. The ICC Cricket World Cup is the biggest stage for this format. Bangladesh Tigers' ODI matches generate huge excitement among local fans, and betting markets are most active during those games.

Test

In this five-day format, patience and strategy play the key role. Each session — morning, afternoon, and evening — has its own odds. In Test cricket, innings margins, pitch conditions, and weather all influence odds, making the betting markets here much more varied.

Competitions

BPL and International Tournaments

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is one of the most appealing competitions for local bettors. Rivalry between teams is fierce in every match, and betting markets expand accordingly. The Indian Premier League (IPL) and ICC international tournaments bring the world's best teams together, creating far more markets for betting.

mcw long covers matches across all these competitions. Alongside cricket, betting markets are also available for football, Kabaddi, and other sports. However, cricket has the greatest depth and variety of markets — because this sport is closest to the hearts of people in Bangladesh.

Other Sports

Betting on football and other sports — how they differ from cricket

Football betting is growing in popularity in Bangladesh, just like cricket. Bettors naturally show more interest in tournaments such as the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FIFA World Cup. However, the main difference between cricket and football lies in the types of markets available.

In cricket, you can bet separately on batsmen, bowlers, overs, and wickets — each as its own event. In football, the most common markets are match result (win/draw/loss), number of goals, and whether both teams will score. In tennis, badminton, or Kabaddi, the number of markets is comparatively smaller, as these involve two individuals or smaller teams.

The way odds are set is the same across all sports — weaker teams have higher odds, stronger teams have lower odds. But in cricket, odds change much faster when a team is close to a target or loses a wicket; in other sports that pace is usually slower. This is why cricket betting is comparatively more dynamic.

Market comparison by sport

Cricket Most markets
Football Medium markets
Tennis Limited markets
Kabaddi / Other Seasonal

The number of markets and variety of odds depend on the format of the sport and the importance of the competition.

Betting Markets

6 popular markets in cricket and how they work

Multiple markets are open for every cricket match. Below is a brief introduction to the six most commonly used markets.

Match Winner

Pick which of the two teams will win. Example: if you choose Team A and Team A wins, your bet wins; if they lose, your bet loses. There is no draw in T20 and ODI, so only two outcomes are possible.

Simple Market

Toss Betting

You can bet on which team will win the toss before the match starts. Since only two outcomes are possible, odds are usually roughly equal. This is a quick-settling market — it has no connection to the match result.

Quick Settlement

Top Batsman

Bet on which player will score the most runs in the match. Odds move up and down based on a player's form and pitch conditions. This market depends only on batting performance, not on which team wins or loses.

Player-Based

Total Runs Over/Under

Bet on whether the total runs scored will be above or below a set number (for example, 160 runs). This market is very popular in T20, because it is fairly possible to estimate runs based on pitch and weather conditions.

Run-Based

Top Bowler

Bet on which bowler will take the most wickets in the match. The odds for this market are determined by a combination of pitch behaviour, the strength of the batting lineup, and weather conditions.

Bowler-Based

Multi Bet

You can combine the outcomes of multiple matches or events into a single bet. You only receive a return if all selections are correct. Because the odds are multiplied, the return is higher — but so is the risk. A detailed example is given in the odds section below.

Guide to Understanding Odds

Decimal, Fractional and American — three odds formats

The same price is written in three different ways. The table below uses two worked examples to explain — the numbers are for explanation only and are not real odds or a guarantee of winning.

Format Example 1 (Team A wins) Example 2 (Team B favourite)
Decimal
Multiply directly
2.25
Stake × 2.25 = total return
1.25
Stake × 1.25 = total return
Fractional
Profit ÷ stake
5/4
৳4 staked returns ৳5 profit
1/4
৳4 staked returns ৳1 profit
American
+ / − sign
+125
৳100 bet returns ৳125 profit
-400
৳400 needed to win ৳100 profit

Worked Example 1 — bet on Team A to win, stake ৳200

Say Team A's winning odds are 2.25 in decimal, 5/4 in fractional, and +125 in American — all three are the same price. You place a ৳200 bet.

  • If Team A wins: total return ৳450 (profit ৳250 + original stake ৳200).
  • If Team A loses: the full ৳200 is lost — no return.

Worked Example 2 — Team B favourite, stake ৳200

Team B is the favourite, so odds are 1.25 in decimal, 1/4 in fractional, and -400 in American (minus means how much you need to stake to win ৳100).

  • If Team B wins: total return ৳250 (profit ৳50 + original stake ৳200).
  • If Team B loses: the full ৳200 is lost.

Multi Bet Example — three selections

Say you have three selections from three separate matches with odds of 1.50, 1.70, and 1.90 respectively. In a multi bet these are multiplied: 1.50 × 1.70 × 1.90 = 4.84 (rounded).

  • Stake ৳100 and all three win: return ৳484.
  • If any one loses: the full ৳100 is lost — in a multi bet, one wrong selection loses the whole thing.

Simple rules for reading odds

Higher decimal odds
The higher the odds, the more of an underdog the team is — and the higher the return.
American (+) means
How much profit you make on a ৳100 bet, stated directly.
American (−) means
How much you need to stake to win ৳100 profit.
How to read fractional
Right number = stake, left number = profit.

Odds shift when a wicket falls — how in-play betting works

Live

Once a match starts, odds change every moment. When a batsman is dismissed, the run rate slows and the bowling team's odds drop — meaning they move into a more favourable position. Equally, a big six or a batsman accelerating during the powerplay will shift odds immediately.

During in-play betting, markets may close briefly between overs or after a ball — especially at key moments. This pause gives the platform time to set accurate odds. In Test matches, a change within a single session can also have a significant impact on odds.

Live betting requires quick decisions, but remember — betting is always for entertainment. Stay within your budget and play responsibly. Read our guide to learn more about responsible gaming guidelines.

Betting Tips

Ways to build good habits in cricket betting

01

Set your budget beforehand

Fix a set budget before each session and stick to it. Trying to recover losses by placing bigger bets can turn betting from entertainment into a problem.

02

Focus well on one market

Start with simpler markets like match winner or over/under. Focusing on a specific type of market rather than betting on all markets at once improves your ability to understand odds.

03

Check pitch and weather conditions

In cricket, a pitch that helps spinners gives the bowling side an advantage. Rain or dew can change the movement of the ball. Having this information helps you understand odds better.

04

Be careful with multi bets

Multi bets may offer higher returns, but the risk increases at the same rate. If even one selection is wrong, the entire bet is lost. So keep your stake small on multi bets.

05

Betting is entertainment — not a source of income

Cricket betting is a form of fun. No strategy or method can guarantee winning every bet. Always treat betting as entertainment.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions about cricket betting

T20 generally has the most markets, as this format offers separate markets for each over and powerplay. ODI also has a good number of markets — especially in the second innings after the target is set. Test matches have session- and day-based markets, but odds change more slowly compared to T20.

If a match is stopped or abandoned due to rain or any other reason, the betting rules depend on how many overs were completed and the platform's specific policy. Generally, if fewer than the required overs are bowled, bets are voided and stakes are returned. If the match is completed using the D/L method, the result is determined based on the revised target.

Odds change fastest immediately after a wicket falls. When a top batsman is dismissed, the batting team's odds rise sharply right away. In the death overs (last 5–6 overs), odds can shift after every ball. During the powerplay, wides and no-balls can also affect the odds.

Since both leagues use the T20 format, the types of markets are broadly the same — match winner, toss, top batsman, over/under runs, and so on. IPL is a bigger global event, so it generally has more markets and greater variety in odds. In BPL, markets tend to be especially active based on the performance of local players.
